I Love My Metronome and You Should Too

May 8th, 2023 by Katherine Moller

If you have come to my classes or been around for a while, you already know that I love my metronome! What you might not know are the many reasons why I’m so dedicated to using one.

  1. We all vary our speeds without realizing it. Practicing with my metronomes keeps me honest! We all like to go faster when the music is easy, and slower when the music is hard!
  2. From day to day, we vary our speed. One day you will play slower and it will feel like you are going at an incredible speed! The next day you will be playing faster without meaning to! By using a metronome, you know how fast you are going, and can maintain that same speed day to day.
  3. It means that you know when you have achieved your goals! If you say “I want to be able to play faster” it is hard to know when you have actually achieved that goal. If you decide that you want to be able to play a jig at a speed of 100, you know exactly when you have achieved that goal!
  4. It lets you track incremental progress. Sometimes we don’t realize what we have accomplished, but by using a metronome and writing down your speeds each day, you will notice when you have increased your speed by 10 beats per minute whereas when you are not using a metronome you probably won’t even notice.

Hopefully, I’ve convinced you to go and buy a metronome. If you’re still a little hesitant, there are plenty of apps you can download first to try one out.

Happy practicing!
